HSN codes on invoices: how many digits you need

If your aggregate turnover in the previous year was up to ₹5 crore, you must show at least a 4-digit HSN code on B2B invoices (optional on B2C). Above ₹5 crore, a 6-digit HSN code is required on every invoice. Services use SAC codes the same way.

What HSN and SAC codes are

HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods — for example 1006 for rice. SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services — for example 998314 for IT consulting. The code decides the GST rate and is reported in GSTR-1's HSN summary.

How many digits

  • Turnover up to ₹5 crore: 4 digits, required on B2B invoices, optional on B2C.
  • Turnover above ₹5 crore: 6 digits on all invoices.
  • Exports: 8 digits.

In HextaBook

Save the HSN or SAC code on each item once; every invoice prints it and GSTR-1's HSN summary adds it up — B2B and B2C separately, as the portal now asks.

Frequently asked questions
